Breathing, a fundamental aspect of life, might soon become the unexpected key to securing our digital lives. In a groundbreaking initiative, Mahesh Panchagnula and his team at the Indian Institute of Technology Madras in Chennai delved into the world of biometrics by exploring the turbulence in the air generated during breathing as a potential method for unlocking smartphones and other devices.


The journey began with sheer curiosity, as Panchagnula's team aimed to develop an AI model capable of identifying individuals with respiratory issues for medication purposes. However, their experiments with breathing data, recorded by an air pressure sensor, led to unexpected revelations beyond their initial goals.


New Scientist reported that the researchers recorded 10 breaths from each of 94 human test subjects, utilizing an air pressure sensor to capture readings an astounding 10,000 times a second. This wealth of data was then meticulously fed into their AI model.


Remarkably, during their research, the team discovered that the AI model, once trained on breath data from a specific individual, could verify whether a new breath belonged to that person with an accuracy exceeding 97%. In a more challenging trial, where the model had no prior knowledge of the individual logging in, it displayed an accuracy of over 50% in attributing the breath to one of two potential individuals.


Panchagnula sheds light on the intricacies of their discovery, explaining that the AI model discerns distinctive patterns of turbulence in the extrathoracic region. This region encompasses the nasal and oral passages, pharynx, and larynx, creating a unique anatomical configuration that leaves a personalized signature in the breath data.


While acknowledging the need for refinement, Panchagnula highlights the initial findings, affirming the feasibility of the concept. What sets this breath-based approach apart is its exclusive efficacy with living individuals. In contrast to other biometric methods, such as fingerprint scans, the breath test poses a morbid advantage – it cannot be passed by a deceased person. This addresses a potential vulnerability in existing systems, as there have been reports suggesting the unlocking of a deceased person's smartphone through their fingerprint – a vulnerability effectively mitigated by this innovative system.


As we navigate a world filled with evolving biometric authentication methods, the prospect of using our breath as a key to unlock our devices opens up new possibilities. The breath test offers a fresh and intriguing approach to digital security, demonstrating the untapped potential within the everyday act of breathing.
